GIORNO 3 - Cappadocia

After breakfast we will visit Soganli Valley, which was continuously inhabited since the earliest days of the Christian era and has churches that date from the 9th to 13th centuries. Some of the churches contain inscriptions giving the exact dates of construction and thus have provided scholars with valuable clues to help date other churches in Cappadocia. Soganli, like other valleys in Cappadocia, exemplifies the harmony between man and nature. Over the centuries men carved shelters for themselves in the cliffs and rock cones of the valley. They also used the rocks provided by nature to create expressions of their religious faith and devotion to God. In Soganli, for the first time the exterior surfaces of some cones were carved to form unique churches with high drums and domes. Lunch will be served at Hanedan Restaurant. We will visit a local Pottery, which has been in the Avanos area for centuries and some of the techniques still used date back to Hittite times to 2000 BC. These famous potters make wonderful souvenirs and are available at a wide range of items from simple ashtrays and mugs to ornate plates and chess sets. Overnight in Cappadocia. Dinner will be at Lil’a Restaurant.

The historian Strabon was right when he remarked of Datça's weather: 'God would send his beloved servants to Datça to live longer'. Dr. Euryphon and his students founded the second biggest medical science school in Cnidus. The island also hosts the largest sun clock of its time which was erected by Eudoksos.
