It is bordered by Sudan in the west, Ethiopia in the south, and Djibouti in the southeast. The northeast and east of the country has an extensive coastline on the Red Sea, directly across from Saudi Arabia and Yemen. The Dahlak Archipelago and several of the Hanish Islands are part of Eritrea. Eritrea's size is approximately 117,600 km2 (45,406 sq mi) with an estimated population of 6 million.

There are major differences between the climate and the lowland plateau. On the plateau (Asmara) the climate is generally spring, the annual average temperature does not exceed 20°/25° C in the periods and during the hottest hours. The summer season (July – September) coincides with the season of the big rain and in the winter (November – February) the weather is dry and the temperature in the evening hours, can descend up to 2° c.
