On 1st May 2012, after forty years, the Torri di Slivia cave was opened again; owing to the incredible richness of its concretions, it is considered one of the marvels of Trieste's Karst. It has been known since the end of the nineteenth century, and the number 22 that identifies it in the land register indicates that it was one of the first of over 3,000 registered caves on the Karst to be explored.

Today there are two entrances: a natural pothole having a depth of about 30 metres, from which it is possible to go down only with speleological equipment, and an artificial entrance that, down 200 steps, leads to the heart of the cave, about 60 metres underground.

The cave is made up of spaces characterized by beautiful vaults, peculiar stalactites and stalagmites, having an height of up to 7 metres and weighing up to 10 tons. The most famous are the stalagmitic towers, a group of eight concretions of different sizes, after which the cave is named.

Besides the small insects typical of the underground environment, a mixed colony of bats lives inside the cave: three species that live, go into hibernation and reproduce inside the cave. They are protected by a partial lighting of the cave and by specific rules that regulate the flow of visitors on the basis of the rhythms of nature.

The cave is situated under one of the properties of the Le Torri di Slivia farm and is an example of active protection of a natural site born out of the close collaboration with Trieste's Natural History Museum and with the Geology Faculty of Trieste University.
