The birth and development of Milano Marittima dates back to the early ' 900, when Cervia was a small town of 9,000 inhabitants and was based on a traditional economy to a large extent linked to salt production, agriculture and fisheries and its population was largely illiterate.
Over the last two decades of the nineteenth century, however, had already begun a pioneering first phase of tourist development, favored by the improvement of sanitation conditions of a territory considered malaric and railroad construction, first with the Ravenna-Cervia of 1884, then to the Ferrara-Ravenna-Rimini of 1889.

Under the agreement the city ceded to the Lombard society a vast area of flotsam with the obligation on the part of the concessionaire to make maisonettes, parks and gardens to create a new resort area. This was called Milano Marittima, which confirmed the strong relationship with the environment.

Just the same Palanti shooting in that time Ebenezer Howard's Garden City-related, a very original urbanistic project, which drew the development of a new town in which the residences were to merge perfectly with the natural surroundings. It was a modern holiday town for middle lombarda, entirely built on a series of cottages lying within the luxuriant pinewood. Among these is the home of the same Palanti, one of the first houses built, that still today can be admired.
He then began a remarkable urban development that, despite the interruption caused by the first world war, continued increasingly evident in the 1920s and led to the transformation of a low marshy coast, often in a place suitable for holidays of urban middle-classes.
The October 20, 1927 Cervia was approved by Ministerial Decree, "nursing Station, residence and tourism ', thanks to the contribution of new localities of Milano Marittima. so, by that year, not only continued the construction of villas in the pines but also began the construction of the first hotels, colonies and catering operations.
Tourist development became more intense in the 1930s, to break again with the second world war and resumed after the war.
In the second post-war period Milano Marittima it States definitively as one of the most renowned seaside resorts of Italy. In the 1950s a skyscraper is constructed eighty metres high, which soon becomes another element of attractiveness of the seaside resort.
Inside the natural park which combines Cervia Milano Marittima is located la Casa delle Farfalle, an environmental education center, inside a large heated greenhouse, reproduces the tropical rainforest ecosystem and is home to hundreds of butterflies flying free among visitors.
Almost bordering on Lido di Savio can still be found, abandoned in a large courtyard now submerged by the plants, the "Cologne Varese¬Ľ. The complex is also known by the name of colonia Marina "Ciano". Characteristic of this marine residence is the coexistence, within the same structure, two buildings, one built in 1937 (designed by the Roman architect Mario Loreti for Federation of the province of Varese), the other around 1960, a period in which he was embarked on a reconstruction project ever completed. During the war it was transformed into a hospital, and sea-side are still present the designs of two large red crosses.
