is a country in northern South America. It borders French Guiana to the east, Guyana to the west, Brazil to the south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the north. Suriname was a former colony of the British and of the Dutch, and was previously known as Dutch Guiana. Suriname achieved independence from the Netherlands on 25 November 1975. At just under 165,000 km2 (64,000 sq mi) Suriname is the smallest sovereign state in South America (French Guiana comprises less territory, but is French territory). It has an estimated population of approximately 490,000, most of whom live on the country's north coast, where the capital Paramaribo is located.

Health |
Hygienic conditions are acceptable, while sanitary facilities are extremely limited. In Paramaribo there are four hospitals. The Academic Hospital is the only one who has an emergency room, but medical personnel qualified for the emergency service may not always be available. Outside of Paramaribo is almost impossible to find appropriate health facilities. Serious health problems that may invest the traveler may require transfer to a country with the possibility of rapid and effective intervention. We recommend that you take out, before embarking on your trip, health insurance include, in addition to the coverage of medical costs, including any return air health or transfer in any other country. Within the Village there are outbreaks of malaria; dengue fever is endemic in Paramaribo and along the coast, the risk of transmission is low. |
